1.
Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, See Him dying on the tree! 'Tis the Christ by man rejected; Yes, my soul, 'tis He, 'tis He! 'Tis the long-expected prophet, David's Son, yet David's Lord; By His Son, God now has spoken Tis the true and faithful Word. Tell me, ye who hear him groaning, Was there ever grief like his? Friends thro' fear his cause disowning, Foes insulting his distress; Many hands were raised to wound him, None would interpose to save; But the deepest stroke that pierced him Was the stroke that Justice gave. Ye who think of sin but lightly, Nor suppose the evil great Here may view its nature rightly, Here its guilt may estimate. Mark the sacrifice appointed, See who bears the awful load; 'Tis the Word, the Lord's Anointed, Son of Man and Son of God. Here we have a firm foundation, Here the refuge of the lost; Christ's the Rock of our salvation, His the name of which we boast. Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, Sacrifice to cancel guilt! None shall ever be confounded Who on him their hope have built.
2.
When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride Forbid it, Lord that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God All the vain things that charm me most I sacrifice them to His blood See, from His head, His hands, His feet Sorrow and love flow mingled down Did e'er such love and Sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown Were the whole realm of nature mine That were an offering far too small Love so amazing, so divine Demands my soul, my life, my all
3.
And can it be that I should gain An int’rest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That you, my God, should die for me? Amazing love! how can it be That you, my God, should die for me? He left His Father’s throne above, So free, so infinite His grace; Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Your eye diffused a quickening ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
4.
Glory be to Jesus, Who in bitter pains Poured for me the life-blood From His sacred veins. Grace and life eternal In that Blood I find; Blest be His compassion, Infinitely kind. Blest through endless ages Be the precious stream, Which from endless torments Did the world redeem. Oft as earth exulting Wafts its praise on high, Angel-hosts rejoicing Make their glad reply. Lift ye then your voices; Swell the mighty flood; Louder still and louder Praise the precious blood.
5.
O sacred Head, now wounded, With grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, Thine only crown. O sacred Head, what glory, What bliss, 'til now was thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine. My burden in Thy Passion, Lord, Thou hast borne for me, For it was my transgression Which brought this woe on thee. I cast me down before Thee, Wrath were my rightful lot; Have mercy, I implore Thee; Redeemer, spurn me not! Be Thou my Consolation, My Shield when I must die; Remind me of Thy Passion When my last hour draws nigh. Mine eyes shall then behold Thee, Upon Thy cross shall dwell, My heart by faith enfold Thee. Who dieth thus dies well! What language shall I borrow To thank Thee, dearest Friend, For this, Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? Oh, make me thine forever! And should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never, Outlive my love for Thee.
6.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? O sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble! Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? O sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble! Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? O sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble! Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when God raised him from the grave? Were you there when God raised him from the grave? O sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble! Were you there when God raised him from the grave?
7.
Sing with all the sons of glory, Sing the resurrection song! Death and sorrow, earth’s dark story, To the former days belong. All around the clouds are breaking, Soon the storms of time shall cease; In God’s likeness we awaken, Knowing everlasting peace. O what glory, far exceeding All that eye has yet perceived! Holiest hearts, for ages pleading, Never that full joy conceived. God has promised, Christ prepares it, There on high our welcome waits. Ev’ry humble spirit shares it; Christ has passed the eternal gates. Life eternal! heav’n rejoices: Jesus lives who once was dead. Shout with joy, O deathless voices! Child of God, lift up your head! Patriarchs from the distant ages, Saints all longing for their heav'n, Prophets, psalmists, seers, and sages, All await the glory giv'n. Life eternal! O what wonders Crowd on faith; what joy unknown, When, amid earth's closing thunders, Saints shall stand before the throne! Oh, to enter that bright portal, See that glowing firmament, Know, with thee, O God immortal, Jesus Christ whom you have sent!

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best Thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord Thou my great Father, I Thy true son Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one Be Thou my Battleshield, sword for my fight Be Thou my dignity, Thou my delight Thou my soul's shelter, Thou my high tower Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my Power Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise Thou mine Inheritance, now and always Thou and Thou only, first in my heart High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art High King of Heaven, my victory won May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heav'n's Sun Heart of my own heart, whatever befall Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all
9.
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near; Praise Him in glad adoration! Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth, Shelters thee under his wings, yes so gently sustaineth. Hast thou not seen how thy desires have been Granted in what He ordaineth? Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee, Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee, Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, If with His love he befriend thee. Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore Him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him! Let the Amen sound from His people again; Gladly forever adore Him!
10.
Come, Thou Fount of every blessing Tune my heart to sing Thy grace Streams of mercy, never ceasing Call for songs of loudest praise Teach me some melodious sonnet Sung by flaming tongues above Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it Mount of Thy redeeming love Hitherto thy love has blessed me Thou hast drawn me to this place And I know thy hand will lead me Safely home by thy good grace Jesus sought me when a stranger Wandering from the fold of God He, to rescue me from danger Bought me with his precious blood Oh, to grace how great a debtor Daily I'm constrained to be Let that goodness like a fetter Bind my wandering heart to Thee Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it Prone to leave the God I love Here's my heart, oh, take and seal it Seal it for Thy courts above
